Class Description:

Born 28 January 1873 in Burgundy, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette is known just as “Colette”.  She was a writer and performer and a woman who attracted controversy, loved and experienced all aspects of life to its fullest.

You may think that you know nothing of Colette’s writings but many of her works are well known around the world. The film “Gigi” starring Audrey Hepburn was adapted from Colette’s book “Gigi” and several of her writings have been adapted for the stage and screen.

I suggest we  read together “Sido” and parts of “Les Vrilles de la Vigne”  while applying the principles of phonetics which will be reminded again and again.  Therefore, you don’t need to have taken the basic course of french phonetics that I gave in the fall.

To give you a taste of this delightfully feminine and feline woman, indeed she loved cats and had many of them, here is a passage from “Les Vrilles de la Vigne” describing violets.  Indeed, she loved flowers and could write pages about them: “plus mauves… non, plus bleues… violettes à courte tige, violettes blanches et violettes bleues, et violettes d’un blanc bleu veiné de nacre mauve…. et des violettes, des violettes, des violettes”….

Make sure you get from the french edition of “Colette” - “Sido” suivi de “Les vrilles de la vigne”, available from $ 5.35.  Do not get editions that only have “Sido”.

French level: intermediate and advanced.
